BUILDING ON WASTE: PLASTIC CAN OFFER A FANTASTIC NEW CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL
Daily Express - 4 February 2009
Plastic is the waste that often proves the most resistant to recycling, but to British manufacturer Howard Waghorn it is simply fantastic.
Through i-plas he has pioneered a process that takes discarded plastics, such as car parts and bottles, and turns them into high-performance, waterproof building materials that can offer a direct replacement for pre-cast concrete, steel and wood.
The first mass-market applications will be bridges, pavements, walls and flood defences and by 2013 the workforce is set to double.
This type of product has been commonly used in America for a decade, but not in Britain. Howard Waghorn says this is because 'we have a more traditionally-minded construction industry here, less open to innovation. However, society is now more environmentally aware and is demanding new products which is now backed by legislation, and so our industry has no choice but to become greener.'
